So it’s been a couple of weeks since my last entry – the first bit of school completely came in like a storm! But I’m back and sailing through an easier homework load this week. My last big project was completing a storyboard for a subject of our choice. Again, working on my drawing skills. I chose to do the Grimm’s brother version of Rapunzel. Which, surprisingly, has a happy ending much to my dismay. The one morbid part? The witch causes the prince to go blind by sticking thorns in his eyes. Yeah, not so pretty. See my drawing below though!
Besides that taking up hours of my time to condense and draw a storyboard, with no words that is since it was a project in learning pictoral representation, I also got to go to the Mayer Hawthorne concert! Not sure if you may know him but pretty much imagine the voice of a Detroit soul singer and give that voice to an tall, skinny thick-rimmed glasses white hipster. True story – and he is amazing.
This is my third week of classes and I have to say I wasn’t expecting to be thrown into the fire so fast. I haven’t been in school for a while so the adjustment came as quite a shock! It is really nice to be doing something that I feel passionate about though! I feel like I am getting into a routine now. And for the first time I felt like a stereotypical design student heading over to Emily Carr for my storyboard presentation with my 19×24 sketchbook – when exactly did this happen? My life at the BCIT portion of my course is all software based right now with an Adobe Indesign course which I am loving! I have that course on a Saturday, which sounds like it would be awful, but it’s a nice break to roll over to BCIT at 9am on Saturday to sit in a lab with a beautiful 27” iMac to work on and learn the program. It’s quite different than my Thursday class which is very collaborative and in true artistic intensity, our teacher has us sketch ideas and logos in one minute and be ready to share our idea with the class. Heart rate: significantly increased on Thursdays. The program has been so great though, I feel like I’ve learnt so much it is hard to believe it has only been three weeks. And really, how often besides being in a cohort do you get to collaborate with 25 other creatives?
My designer love of the moment? Craig Stanghetta. He’s really popular in the new trendy areas of Vancouver and designed Meat and Bread, Revolver, Bao Bei. Check out this article I just read about him:
Oh yeah, and if you love coffee, seriously go to Revolver in Gastown.
